Here are three facts to rock your world!
Fact #1: Studies by Gallup and the Pew Research Center have documented a dramatic decrease in the number of books Americans read annually. For example, 25% of Americans haven’t read a single book in the past year, which is triple the percentage from 1978. The irony is that, while information is increasing exponentially, the number of those who read is decreasing.
Fact #2: The lives of Americans are currently being shaped by two important trends. First, the average life expectancy is hitting new highs at between the ages of 78-80. Second, with the speed of change both with technology and in our economy, many (including the Wall Street Journal) are predicting up to seven career changes in one’s lifetime. With increased life expectancy (and due to lack of savings) for many, instead of retirement, age 65 is becoming just one more career transition.
Fact #3: Young people seeking a career (and their parents) are having to face the reality of escalating education costs, both in terms of finances and time invested. That’s combined with the inability of a high percentage of graduates to find post-college employment in the fields they have prepared for. In contrast, many young people are discovering a more direct and accelerated path for entering the workforce by means of low-cost online training and certification. In a world where technological change is in almost constant flux, some are even embracing a “learn as you go” mentality, while still others are opting to create their own small businesses online.
Here’s the good news.
Advantage #1: In a culture where people read less and are overwhelmed by “information overload,” a Lifelong Learner is in a perfect position to curate, organize and deliver content to unique audiences in a format that is convenient, creative and digestible.
Advantage #2: A Self-Educator is also in a great position to pivot as necessary when their own career changes, as well as to help others develop the skills to do the same.
Advantage #3: Finally, a Lifelong Learner is in an unprecedented position to capitalize on the new opportunities available in online learning, certification and instruction.
As you can see, Life Long Learners are in a class by themselves and are an invaluable resource in this information age!
